In Art 20, students continue learning how to effectively use the Elements of Art, in order to create original and unique artwork. More design principles are introduced, like contrast and emphasis and students have the opportunity to make more personalized choices about what media they work with. We continue to explore Art Movements, investigating Art Nouveau and Surrealism and we engage in studio projects that involve new forms of art making (that were not explored in Art 10): linocut print making and pen & ink with coffee! Regardless of whether it is a 3 or 5 credit Art 20 class that a student completes, all students will be well-equipped and experienced to continue on to 5 credit Art 30, if they wish. Art criticism continues to be a part of this course, as students continue learn to talk about, interpret and understand various artwork, including their own. Students are expected to make original art and to offer the viewer something that a camera cannot.
We recently completed our investigation of the exciting art movement, Art Nouveau. After learning about the unique characteristics that set Art Nouveau apart from other art movements, students created their own compositions, using the stylistic features of Art Nouveau, and saw them to completion in the form of linocut prints. They are lovely. See below. Students are now exploring exaggerated angles, abstract imagery, form and contrast, three dimensionally, in a hand-building clay project.
